Always keep tatami dry to prevent mould or mildew.
Clean with a slightly damp cloth and avoid harsh cleaning solutions. When vacuuming, follow the direction of the weave — going against it can damage the surface or push dirt deeper into the material — and use the lowest suction setting where possible.
Tatami is sensitive to moisture, so allow air to circulate above or beneath it. Air it out occasionally, ideally on dry, sunny days.
