The design

Sundal is designed by the Norwegian designer Andreas Engesvik and named after Sunndal, a village he loves, surrounded by glaciers and quiet valleys. Clean lines and a calm, minimal expression make it a Scandinavian design classic in the making.

It was designed with restaurants, cafés, patios and balconies in mind and is built to stay outdoors in any season. A grey seat cushion can be added.

Materials and comfort

The seat and back are FSC-certified teak on a black powder-coated stainless steel frame. The optional seat cushion is made in grey Agora Panama Fossil outdoor fabric.

Teak

Skargaarden uses only high-grade teak (Tectona grandis) from carefully managed plantations. Teak is a dense hardwood, rich in natural oils, which makes it one of the most durable woods for outdoor use. It needs no preservatives or treatment to last, and every piece is sanded and polished before it leaves the factory.

Left outside, teak slowly turns a soft silver-grey as the surface oils evaporate. The oil deeper in the wood stays, and that is what keeps it strong. Small surface cracks or water marks can appear in the first months; these even out as the wood weathers to an even grey.

  • A little rough after rain? When the furniture is used outside and gets wet, the surface of the teak becomes slightly rough. This is a natural process: a light sanding makes it smooth again, and it usually only needs doing once or twice in the beginning.
  • Do not oil teak that stays outdoors. Oil does not make it last longer, can encourage mildew and leads to patchy colouring. Oil is only worth using on teak kept indoors.
  • Rinse with a garden hose and wash now and then with mild soapy water and a soft brush. Never use a pressure washer.
  • To keep the original honey colour, clean the wood with a teak cleaner, let it dry, then apply a thin layer of teak sealer. Repeat about once a year. Do not use sealer on new teak.
  • Teak can stay outside all year, but it ages best if it spends the winter under a breathable cover or in an unheated shed.

Stainless steel

Skargaarden uses grade 304 stainless steel, here finished with a durable powder coating. Stainless steel resists corrosion far better than ordinary steel, although salt air and pollution can still leave small surface marks, especially near the coast. These are only cosmetic and do not affect the strength or life of the furniture.

  • Wipe with a soft cloth or sponge and water with a mild liquid detergent.
  • Dry off standing water with a soft cloth to avoid water marks.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners and never use steel wool, which leaves particles that cause rust.

Outdoor fabrics

Skargaarden's outdoor fabrics are made for life outside and are guaranteed for at least 5 years against fading in sunlight. Fabrics woven with recycled fibres can vary slightly in colour.

  • Brush off dirt regularly before it works into the fabric, and deal with spills straight away.
  • Blot liquid spills with a clean, dry cloth; do not rub. For oily spills, sprinkle on corn starch to absorb it, then scrape it off.
  • For stains, spray on a mild soap solution, work it in gently with a sponge or very soft brush, rinse thoroughly and let the fabric air dry.
  • The fabrics do not grow mildew themselves, but it can grow on dirt left on them. To remove it, mix about 250 ml bleach and 60 ml mild soap in 4 litres of water, spray over the whole area, leave for 15 minutes, clean with a sponge or soft brush, rinse well and air dry. Treat the whole surface to avoid water rings.

Winter storage

  • Store the furniture indoors, or cover it with a breathable cover. A cover that is fully airtight traps moisture and can cause mould.
  • Leave a small gap between the cover and the ground so air can circulate.
  • Store the cushions separately, indoors and out of reach of pests.

Warranty

  • 2-year guarantee under EU consumer law, covering manufacturing defects.
  • Skargaarden outdoor fabrics carry a minimum 5-year warranty against fading from sunlight.
  • Natural weathering of teak (greying, roughening of the grain, small surface cracks) is part of the material's character and is not a defect.
